ltd repress! dominik eulberg’s second ep on his label apus apus features the track “roter gitterling“ (eng. basket stinkhorn / red cage) on the a side and „tintenfischpilz“ (engl. octopus stinkhorn / devil s fingers) on the flip side. a. roter gitterling the fleshy red cage of this kind of mushroom reminds of a merging of an upside down shopping string bag and an alien. not allowing any objection, the track strides forward with determination towards a musical interpretation of this strange being. a fulminant kick drum counteracts in a very prosaic way the bitter-sweet pads. in a very narrative fashion the track gathers speed and flocks diverse soundscapes and disembogues in a break of harmonical expanse. conciliatory and in a hedonistic way the bass drum eventually stitches together what belongs to each other. b. tintenfischpilz this bizarre looking extraterrestrial mushroom evokes at first glance the image of a dead octopus or radioactive vegetable. as in a science fiction movie four to six tentacles sprout and raise out of a common stinkhorn and later spread into a star shape look. in an unparalleled manner this stunning progression is executed musically by eulberg with a high degree of elaboration. all done with elegant blend of continuous progression and permanent change the track wreathes itself towards heaven, whereas fragmented melody artifacts pour into the shape of a miraculous emergence.

ltd repress! dominik eulberg’s third ep on his label apus apus features the track -abendpfauenauge- (eng. eyed hawkmoth) on the a side and -oleanderschwärmer- (engl. oleander hawkmoth) on the flip side. -abendpfauenauge- brings together a romantic outlook as well as a rave quality through sequential tight knit melodies which enables the dj to play the tune in the club. -oleanderschwärmer- on the contrary is a dreamy and airy 15 minute epic that is a true fascinating listening experience. a. abendpfauenauge the eyed hawkmoth owes its name to the distinctive eye drawing on its hind wings. the bark-colored forewings provide perfect camouflage when resting on tree trunks during the day. in case of a disturbance, it pulls the forewings up jerkily. the moth now gives off the appearance of a face that suddenly stares at the troublemaker. forward and backward swinging movements of the body intensify this threatening effect. b. oleanderschwärmer with its incredible colors, the oleander hawkmoth is a symbol of tropical beauty. it rarely flies into our fields as a migratory butterfly. with a wingspan of up to 13 centimeters, it is a true -jumbo-. it s flying style is similar to that of hummingbirds. it reaches speeds of up to 50 km/h. it’s proboscis, the tubular mouthpart used for feeding on the nectar of flowers, becomes as long as its body.

ltd 2020 repress !! tj hertzs first original release since 2014s critically acclaimed flatland lp comes in the form of objekt #4, a continuation of his club-focused white label series and a tribute to the sadly now defunct basement q, a formative and beloved haunt in berlin’s schöneberg district which quietly but profoundly shaped the musical identities of hertz and several of his contemporaries until its final closure in 2012.
the two tracks on objekt #4 pay tribute to two of the many musical facets of basement q in its later years. a-side “needle and thread” aims to condense several hours of a thursday night in the basement into 9 minutes and 26 seconds, embellishing a hypnotic rolling techno backbone with hyper-detailed atmospherics, enchanting melodies and tight, strident breakbeats. b-side “theme from q” is hertz’s reinterpretation of a basement q anthem, owner and founder dj bogdan’s own “love inna basement (morning dub)”, which never saw an official release despite providing the soundtrack to over 20 years of late morning love-ins in the cellar underneath the sattler & söhne glue factory. together, the two tracks offer an incomplete but nonetheless seductive illustration of one of the most idiosyncratic and overlooked clubs in berlin’s recent history.

repress 2020 - derek carr is a name known by few and far between, with only a handful of vinyl releases in the early 2000s, he built a worthy but unfortunately not widely-spread reputation for putting together stunning deep techno. originally pressed in finite numbers, the records have recently found themselves in demand on discogs, and rightly so, derek s music is in a class of its own. having been a big fan since his releases on then local (to label owner ben) leeds label geek records, for those that knoe has dug deep into the archives to put together a sizeable selection of derek s back catalogue, with some unreleased gems dotted amongst the classic must-haves, spread across three eps part three in derek s starts with cuba, probably the most sought after track in his back catalogue. it s stunning simplicity and charming summer vibe puts it amongst derek s greatest works and understandably so. red then slots into the a2 position which was originally released under the radar on a headspace compilation. as warm as cuba but with an added touch of melancholy. truly outstanding deep house. iceberg takes things back more into techno territory with a funked up bass line, stepping rhythms, detroit strings and those trademark twinkly leads. finally penthouse apartment 3am a lush electro breakbeat track from the very hard to find trident release, rounds off the ep with aplomb

2020 repress !! about the bamboo recordings: jacobus derwort started exploring sonic soundscapes listening to his short-wave world receiver at the age of 12. there he would hear music from africa, china, japan, indonesia, south america and beyond. he started playing guitar, piano, percussion and saxophone. he met hanyo van oosterom in 1978 and they started the legendary cult rock band, the jones . derwort was playing the sax, van oosterom the drums. they started conducting sound experiments in hanyo’s small cellar in the dutch village of krimpen aan den ijssel. in the early eighties they made their first cassette, the kallikatsou . hanyo started the ambient collective chi in 1983. jacobus was the first musician to join chi. together, they went to the magic rock “the kallikatsou” on the island of patmos, greece. here, hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. he heard the sound of chi in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. being together at the kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of chi, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc...
